Garpu tertelan selama hampir 10 tahun di dalam perut Lee Gardner, seorang pria berusia 40 tahun dilarikan ke rumah sakit setelah muntah darah dan mengalami kram perut yang amat menyakitkan. Namun, yang membuat para dokter di Rumah Sakit Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Inggris, terkejut adalah ketika mereka menemukan sebuah garpu berukuran sembilan inci di perut pria itu, dan sudah ada disana lebih dari satu dekade. Bahkan, yang lebih membingungkan para petugas medis adalah pengakuan Gardner yang mengatakan bahwa dirinya sama sekali lupa telah menelan alat makan itu. Sepuluh tahun yang lalu, dokter mengatakan kepada Gardner bahwa garpu yang ia telan akan keluar secara alami, sehingga ia menganggap bahwa garpu itu sudah menghilang dari perutnya. Namun kenyataannya garpu itu masih utuh dan berada di bagian bawah perutnya. "Saya mengalami muntah darah, dan ketika mereka memeriksa bagian dalam perutku dengan kamera, dokter menanyakan bahwa apakah aku yakin tidak pernah menelan benda apapun," tutur Gardner yang saat ini telah pulih setelah garpu itu dikeluarkan dari perutnya.
Gardner mengatakan bahwa dirinya tidak menelan benda apapun, namun sang dokter menjelaskan bahwa dirinya melihat ada sebuah benda berbentuk garpu di dalam perutnya. Ia kemudian teringat kejadian sepuluh tahun yang lalu, dimana ia tak sengaja menelan sebuah garpu akibat tersedak ketika sedang bermain-main dengan alat makan dari plastik itu.
Konsultan ahli bedah umum, Hanis Shiwani, memutuskan bahwa terlalu berbahaya untuk mencoba mengambil garpu tersebut tanpa operasi, dan kemudian melakukan operasi selama 45 menit untuk mengeluarkan garpu itu. "Garpu itu mengganggu dinding lambung dan menyebabkan perdarahan. Saya merasa lega saat mengetahui itu bukan kanker."
